The team USA was sure to go to play off from the first place before today`s game. The Finns knew they cannot end higher than in the third position in pool B. Both teams played only for honour. “It is true that this match couldn´t have changed the standings but we wanted to stay fit. We do not play just for points, we wanted the spectators to enjoy our performance,“ said James vanRiemsdyk explaining the motivation of the team.
The beginning belonged to the USA but they interrupted their pressure by a useless penalty. The Finns had some chances to score during the powerplay, Smiths remained unbeaten though. The first goal of the game was scored in the tenth minute. Van Riemsdyk fired from the slot and the puck found a hole between Helenius´s pads. Colin Wilson moved it from the crease behind the goal line.
Rakhshani hit the post a few seconds later. In the fourteenth minute the Americans scored for the second time. VanRiemsdyk fired from the blue line and Helenius deflected the puck right to Jonathan Blum.
The Americans were better even at the beginning of the second period. Colin Wilson finished his hat-trick in the 22nd minute of the game. The fourth goal was scored three minutes later when Tyler Ruegsegger fired from the slot. Halfway through the game the US players definitely turned the game into an exhibition. The shot ofJames vanRiemsdyk ended up behind Helenius´s back and forced him out of the crease. Sateri came in to substitute for him.
Just before the end of the second period the North Europeans were offered a chance to score in the 5 on 3 powerplay. The only thing that interrupted the sleeping spectators was when Kousa hit the post. Suomi was hardly trying to score at least once but Smith locked his goal.
For the last period John Palmer stood in the American crease for the first time during the tournament. In the 47th minute wide open Aaltonen had a breakaway but he did not finish his backhand move and did not take a shot. It took 51 minutes for Finland to finally get on the board. Salminen made an ingenious pass to Nico Aaltonen and he put the puck into the back of the net.
For the few Finnish fans present Mikko Kousa took a shot from the blue line and scored again. 46 seconds before the final whistle Niclas Lucenius added one more goal and the referees allowed the goal after video review in spite of the fact The US team claimed the goal was scored with a high stick. "Even when Finland scored their third goal, I was not afraid that we lost the victory. I told our guys to hold the puck on our sticks as far away from our goal as possible," vanRiemsdyk said after the game, he finished with one goal and three assists.
More than 1100 spectators saw a definite victory for team USA. Jonas Lehtivuori from Finland and Collin Wilson were announced the best players. “I´m looking forward to games in the play offs. They are going to be tough games. It´s difficult to say who´s the favourite. Canada, Sweden and the home team of the Czech Republic are strong traditionally,“ Wilson thought about the games in Pardubice.
