Twice in the first period Czech Republic had the opportunity to play 5-on-3 but failed to score. Instead Russia scored three unanswered goals in the middle of the second period to get a solid lead that would be enough to leave the ice as winners. The game ended 4-2.
“Maybe if we had scored on our power-play when we played 5-on-3 in the end of the first period the game would have gone our way ”, said the Czech coach Miloslav Horava after the game.
In the first period the Czechs had several chances to score on the power-play. According to the official stats the shots on goals in the first period ended 5-4 in favour of Russia, but the number of scoring chances was a lot higher.
Yakov Seleznev scored the opening goal just prior to the 8-minute mark of the second period. It was his first point of the tournament. A low shot from the point just as Czech Republic returned to full strength.
Viktor Tikhonov made it 2-0 when the Czech defenders weren’t tough enough in front of their net. Nikita Filatov scored the important 3-0 goal less than 2 minutes later. The Czech defender didn’t see Filatov who came at the far post and scored on a pass from Anisimov.
“It was a very difficult game and also a little bit nervous”, said Filatov. “It was a very difficult start of the game. We had to play short-handed a lot, but then we started to play calm.
In the next minute Radek Meidl scored the only Czech goal of the game. Russian goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky saved 12 of only 13 Czech shots in the game. “in the second period we started to play as a team. That’s why we won”, said Bobrovsky after the game.
Anton Korolev finalized the scoring to 4-1. It was an easy goal on an opening pass from Bodrov.
Russia will play Sweden in the Semi final on Friday.
“I know nothing about the Swedish team. Just that they beat Canada and that is enough”, said Filatov.
The Czechs will play Finland for the fifth place tomorrow.
“All games are important so we will focus to win the game”, said Czech forward Martin Latal about the upcoming fifth place game.
Miloslav Horava (Czech Rep.):
I have to say the same thing I have said before. We played at 100% but it was not enough today. Maybe if we had scored on our power-play when we played 5-on-3 in the end of the first period the game would have gone our way.
Sergei Nemchinov (Russia):
It was an important quarter final game and of course many penalties in the beginning made it hard but I think we played well. I like how we played in the first period. In the second we scored on our chances. Now we have to get ready for the semi final.
